On the 6th Day, They Rested

We woke up at 4am to check out of our hotel and fly to Bangkok. We picked and early flight to allow plenty of time for independent exploration when we arrived. Leaving our big suitcases with the hotel in Singapore, we felt like cool kids with just roller bags. Frankly, almost everybody has roller bags instead of serious suitcases. We laughed at our ability to keep up appearances.

At the airport, we decided to get breakfast. There were many 24-hour food vendors and they were all busy. However, all of them were serving food that smell overwhelmingly of fish and churned both of our stomachs. Jane had to run to the bathroom to be sick.

Breakfast menus were like this. If one doesn’t eat gluten, fish, or grains for breakfast, there isn’t much to select from.

I found a place that had eggs (that tasted like fish) and a side of carrot hash (which I wrongly assumed would be like hashbrowns made of carrots. It tasted like a cake of fish and went uneaten.

During our 2.5 hour ride, Jane got sick again on the plane and we realized this was more than repulsion from strong smelling foods. When we landed in Bangkok, we headed for our hotel, the Conrad again.

A note about Conrad. I’d never really heard of it. A Hilton brand, they’ve shown up in the cities we have been traveling too. Hilton has many Conrads in China and Southeast Asia, along with Seoul, Tokyo, NYC, and Los Angeles. The decor is luxurious, with little touches like solid marble bathroom walls and buttons to control lots of different light moods and styles. Full blackout curtains and nighttime turn downs make us feel like we are living fancy.  In Singapore we got a screaming deal or we would g have stayed there.  In Bangkok, hotels are generally cheaper and we stayed here because it was a safe neighborhood and we were traveling without Joel

Arriving st Conrad in Bangkok, we were massively impressed.  They upgraded our room to a corner room and situated us in the executive lounge while they cleaned it.  Jane was feeling terrible and looked pale, so we hung around in our room all day.  At once point Jane got up and dressed to go out exploring but the nausea brought her right back down.  We ordered room service when she was able to eat again.  I am so entirely thankful we chose the Conrad  if we had to hunker down anywhere, this room with its views and various sitting spaces was perfect.  We think we will be ready for adventure in the morning.

Lunch in the lounge (for some and not others).

More adventures in Thailand tomorrow, as we hit the road for major sites north of Bangkok.
