Our new favorite K-Pop Idol

This morning we had a scheduled tour that started at 8 AM, an early start we could manage. Due to ticket restrictions, the tour time had to be moved and we had to be at the bus at 6:20 AM for a 7 hour bus tour. When Jane and I woke up, Joel had already been up and showered. He proposed a crazy idea, that we ditch the tour and go back to bed. Surprised at the proposition, we couldn’t argue with the logic so we all just fell back asleep until about 10 AM.  It was a vacation indulgence.

After that, we worked on packing up our stuff for the airport tomorrow so we don’t have to do that in the morning. All packed, we headed for Gangnam again, this time for a K-Pop dance class (obviously for Jane only).  We booked private dance lessons for Jane at the K-Pop training academy, a huge institution that’s churning out potential K-Pop band members, with both vocal and dance training. The school is literally right behind the giant screen that Sylvia sent us a link to a couple of days ago.

K-Pop dancers typically wear baggy pants so the shopping we did a few days ago were to find the prescribed clothes she was supposed to wear.

The teacher was instantly lovable, full of energy, and sweet to Jane.  The studio was 3 stories of cutting edge vocal and dance training spaces.

But before we get to the video of the big results of the K-Pop lessons, let’s back the story up a bit.

Before the class, we stopped at a salad restaurant for lunch. The salad was pleasant and not worth even mentioning here, but for one thing.  We were seated across from a Chinese dim sum restaurant advertising its menu with a looped video of highly stylized food pics and movies.  Every time a particular part of the movie looped by, we roared with laughter.  People were actually eating in this restaurant!

Just salad and Sprite Zeros, no runny-nosed pigs.

We didn’t eat here, but we surely laughed about this too.

We stopped in a store called Butter.

There are many butter themed stores and restaurants in Korea (even a BTS K-Pop album called Butter), but this one had an actual walking talking butter mascot.  Jane was not interested in getting close to him but Joel was.

Without further delay, here are videos of Jane dancing. Joel and I didn’t stay for the class but came in at the end.

After class, we roamed the Hongdae Festival Street, a non-stop pedestrian party.

We have one last day here tomorrow, with a flight departing at 5:24 PM.

  2. Thanks for the great photos and fantastic videos, Beth!! Sorry the tour didn't work out, but you certainly made it up with another amazing day. The snotty nosed pig was a rare find himself. Suitable for Thanksgiving or Halloween. The videos of Jane and Joel are YouTube winners. With Joel's respectful demeanor and his recently acquired command of the Korean language, it's no wonder the Butter mascot was charmed. Double WOW on Jane's K-pop dancing! She looked like she invented it. Absolutely perfect. Honestly, I can see her doing K-pop in next year's Kaleidoscope. Make that "K-pop-oscope." Well done Jane! Your parents are the best.
