A last one for the road

It was a rainy night and morning, so we ditched our plan for walking to a nearby outdoor sight in favor of coffee in “A Twosome Place”, our favorite coffee joint.

Jane ordered the Charlie Brown…

… but it went un-drunk, because she found it repulsive.

We decided to have one traditional Korean meal before we left for the airport. We were very hungry after a dinner mis-fire the night before. We couldn’t eat the “pizza” we ordered or the chicken either.  We went to bed hungry instead.

We were determined not to repeat our mistakes. Lunch was high atop the Lotte department store eating Korean beef stew. Koreans are very generous at explaining and helping when self-cooking is required.

Everyone was wearing the standard-issue bibs, not just us.

It was a perfect last meal before our flight. Everything was delicious and light, with a bunch of fresh vegetables. First they cooked the beef and vegetable and served it to us. When we were done, they cooked the noodles in the reduced broth, garlic, pepper, and red pepper they added at the table. When that was done, they would also have stir fried our rice is the thickest starchy noodle broth, but we were stuffed and aborted our mission.  We particularly liked the white kimchee soup and the fact that they carefully cooked Joel’s without mushrooms before cooking the mushrooms for Jane and me.

We have been talking about the Chinese embassy next door for days. We even watched someone enter through the heavily guarded sallyport last night. Today we realized we had a birdseye view into the embassy grounds from our hotel.

We loaded up into our airport van with our favorite driver, the one that brought us from the airport a couple of weeks ago.  It feels like a lifetime ago, when we knew nothing about Korea.  We are not sad about leaving at all.  We are all ready to sleep at home and leave with the comforting confidence we will be back.

  1. Interesting menu. The cornbread pizza looks pretty tasty. Black mini shrimp hotdog, anyone? Maybe next time. Have a safe, comfortable return flight.
