Caffeine and Blister

We woke up today to perfect New York weather, with clear sunny skies and cool weather that didn’t require jackets. But let’s back up a minute:

A couple of days ago, we bought cookies from a well-reviewed bakery nearby, Schmackery’s. Last night, I ate one of those cookies while we watched the Hobbit. We all went to bed but I soon discovered that dark chocolate cookie had been made with espresso. Ugh!  After staying up way too late, I slept in and we got a late start.  But let’s back up further still:

Over the last 3 prior days, we logged over 30 miles of walking, and both Joel and I had gone running in the morning before we started our day. In the course of that mileage, one of us developed a pretty significant blister on a big toe. Though we had all of the proper bandages for it, we scrapped our walking-intensive itinerary for today to allow a little recuperation.

Back to this morning, we woke up later and skipped runs. Instead, we headed out to SOHO, our favorite NYC locale for shopping and daytime entertainment. We strolled stores, drank coffee, and stopped for lunch at an Australian restaurant which knocked everyone’s socks off.

These guys were arduously scrubbing the bum of this cat statue  and for juvenile reasons it just cracked us up.

This box labeled hello kitty brand chocolate covered marshmallows was actually filled with bags of dried shiitake mushrooms. Jane was mortified.

Tasty Australian salads with salmon hit the spot. Doesn’t look like much in photos but it was a veggie treat!

After lunch, we stopped in TriBeCa to grab a loaf of baguette in a fancy French bakery. There was only a single loaf left and we were nervous someone in front of us in line would nab it first. In the end, that last loaf was ours and Jane fantasized about how we could celebrate with it.

Back at our apartment:

French bread activity 1: Batter up!

French bread activity 2: twirl in your PJs.

French bread activity 3: Parisian subway style sandwiches with French ham for dinner while watching more Hobbit.

After recuperation and dinner, we headed out to an 8pm showing of Moulin Rouge, featuring Boy George. He was spectacular, really stole the show.  Costumes, sets, choreography, and production all scored 10/10 in our books.

Now we are winding down to get ready for another NYC day tomorrow. Spoiler alert: We are Bronx bound.
